Senaru & Sembalun

After the turquoise waters and laid-back rhythm of Gili Air, many travelers find themselves wondering what’s next. If you’re not quite ready to leave Lombok—or Indonesia altogether—there are two destinations close by that offer a perfect contrast while keeping the magic alive: Senaru and Sembalun.

These two highland villages sit close to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, and together they provide a completely different experience from island life—cooler air, dramatic landscapes, and a deeper connection to nature and local culture.

Gili Air is all about slow mornings, beach swims, and sunset cocktails. Senaru and Sembalun shift the focus from ocean to mountains. The air is cooler, the crowds thinner, and the atmosphere quieter. After days of heat and humidity, the crisp mountain climate feels incredibly refreshing.

Both Senaru and Sembalun are known as the main entry points for trekking Mount Rinjani. Even if you’re not planning to summit, just being in the presence of this massive volcano is awe-inspiring.

  • Senaru is famous for its jungle setting and access to stunning waterfalls like Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep. It feels wild and slightly mystical, with dense greenery and the constant sound of rushing water.
  • Sembalun, on the other hand, is more open and expansive. Think rolling hills, farmland, and sweeping views that stretch for miles.

Whether you hike or not, both places offer incredible viewpoints, sunrise spots, and scenic walks that don’t require intense effort.

Unlike the Gili Islands, which are built around tourism, Senaru and Sembalun still feel like real working villages. Life moves at a different pace here.

In Sembalun, you’ll see farmers tending to fields of strawberries, onions, and vegetables. In Senaru, traditional Sasak culture is more visible, and you may have the chance to visit local homes or learn about customs that have been preserved for generations.

Getting to Senaru or Sembalun from Gili Air is relatively straightforward:

  • Boat back to Lombok (Bangsal or Teluk Nara harbour)
  • Then a 1.5 – 3 hour drive inland

The journey itself becomes part of the experience as you move from coastal views into mountainous terrain.

One of the best reasons to visit Senaru and Sembalun after Gili Air is balance. Travel feels richer when you experience contrast—beach and mountain, relaxation and exploration, social energy and quiet reflection.

Gili Air gives you rest.
Senaru and Sembalun give you perspective.
